Your Realtor® Interview Checklist

You should choose your Realtor® with as much care as you would a doctor or lawyer. After all, for many people, buying a home is the largest financial investment they will make in a lifetime.

Friends, neighbors, or coworkers are a good source of referrals for Des Moines area Realtors®. Try to find out about their home buying or home selling process. What kind of service did they receive? Would they choose to use their Realtor® again?

Here are some questions to ask the Realtor® you are interviewing:

  • Do you work as a full-time Realtor®?
  • How much communication do you typically have with your clients?
  • How well do you know Des Moines and its surrounding areas?
  • What is your proven marketing system for selling my home?
  • Have you earned any professional designations in real estate?
  • Can you give me a list of past clients who have closed on their sale that I may contact?
  • What is your knowledge level in the following categories: (as applicable)
    • The community/neighborhood I am specifically interested in
    • Relocating new families to the area
    • New construction
    • Pricing
    • Condos/townhomes
    • Investment/income properties
    • Acreages
    • Mortgage financing
  • Can you provide me with contacts or referrals for moving-related items?
  • Will you stay in contact with me after I close on my new home? How will you do this?

In the end, your decision comes down to trust. You, as the home buyer or seller, have a lot of important decisions to make, and naturally will be relying on your Realtor® to assist you in making the best decisions for your situation.
