Moving Checklist

Eight Weeks before Moving Day

  • Use items you can't take with you (frozen foods and perishables).
  • Start a possessions inventory list. Arrange to transfer your family's medical and school records.
  • Obtain a floor plan for your new residence, decide what you are going to take with you and what you are going to donate or give-away.
  • Get estimates from moving companies.

Six Weeks before Moving Day

  • Choose a moving company and contact the mover to make arrangements for the time and date of the move.
  • Evaluate your possessions inventory list then decide if you can donate any items that you won't be taking.
  • Complete change of address cards via the post office or online for the following:
    • Charge cards
    • Banks
    • Insurance Companies
    • Magazines
    • Relatives and Friends
    • Schools
    • Income Tax Bureau
    • Social Security Administration
  • Begin off-site storage if necessary.
  • Subscribe to local newspapers in your new community.

Four Weeks before Moving Day

  • Start packing!!
  • Contact your insurance company about coverage on your new residence.
  • Disconnect at your current residence and connect at your new residence gas, electric, water, sewer, trash, telephone and cable.
  • Gather important documentation such as school records, medical records, birth certificates, financial information and wills.

Three Weeks before Moving Day

  • Arrange for childcare on moving day.
  • Arrange to close current bank accounts and open new bank accounts in your new community.
  • Make travel plans for your family.

Two Weeks before Moving Day

  • Contact your moving company and review the plans for your moving day.
  • Arrange for special transportation for your pets and plants.
  • Service your car.

One Week before Moving Day

  • Cancel your newspaper.
  • Get copies of veterinary records for your pets.
  • Buy your traveler's checks.
  • Pickup any dry cleaning, return books to the library and return rented DVD's.
  • .Prepare detailed driving instructions for the mover's, Include emergency phone numbers.
  • Buy a two week supply of any medications and forward your prescriptions to a pharmacy in your new community.

Two to Three Days before Moving Day

  • Contact your moving company for any updates.
  • Your mover should begin packing.
  • Defrost your refrigerator and freezers.
  • Disconnect all other major appliances.
  • Prepare a survival kit for the first night in your new home/community:
    • Sheets
    • Towels
    • Toiletries
    • Phone
    • Alarm Clock
    • Change of Clothes
    • Flashlight

Moving Day

  • Be home to answer any questions your movers may have.
  • Complete the information on the billing for the movers and carefully read the contents of the inventory sheet.
  • Take one final look around your current home to see if you forgot anything.
  • Give the movers the directions to your new residence and the emergency numbers where you can be reached during the transition.
